During the 2018 shopping season: Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday all demonstrated sizable year-over-year sales growth.
According to Adobe Analytics - which measure transactions from 80 of the top 100 U.S. online retailers – online spending on Thanksgiving 2018 hit $3.7B, representing a 27.9 percent growth rate in comparison to 18.3 percent growth rate in 2017. Online sales on Black Friday increased 23.6 percent from 2017, to $6.2B. More than $2B of these revenues came from smartphones with 33.5% percent of total sales attributed to mobile, up from 29 percent the year before. Cyber Monday was the biggest sales day of the year with online revenues of $7.9B, an increase of 19.3 percent from 2017. Over half of the visits — 54.3 percent — came from mobile devices!
Over the five-day period, online shopping with mobile devices represented 54.3 percent of all site visits (46.6 percent smartphones, 7.7 percent tablets) with mobile devices accounting for 35.9 percent of revenue!
Many consumers place online orders and schedule in store pick-ups. In the industry these are known as BOPIS orders or “buy online, pick up in store.” Adobe reports that BOPIS orders were up 73 percent from Thanksgiving 2018 to Black Friday 2018. According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, among consumers who utilized BOPIS, 64 percent made an additional in-store purchase.
Mobile users have outnumbered visitors on desktops for a long time with respect to catalog browsing but, the number of mobile purchasers is increasing every day as indicated by Adobe Analytics. With this in mind it is essential to convert mobile users!
